We hope you enjoy the book! “Smart, witty, funny, painful, honest, brutal, forgiving. Truly amazing and left me wanting more!” “This was laugh-out-loud funny and relatable. I felt like I was reading my best friend's diary.” — Five Star Reviews Maddy Quinn survived being a fat kid and a fat adolescent, but being fat in her twenties is too much. Maddy is a smart, funny, chunky monkey living in a world of skinnies with only an XXL sweater set to keep her safe. Living at home, Maddy attends a nearby university where she majors in Political Science and Not Being Noticed. Her mother would return her to the womb for safekeeping if only there was room for a 266 1/2 lb. adult, and her grandmother has never met an emotion that couldn't be suffocated with mashed potatoes or chicken fried steak. Despite the over-love of a nutty family and the support of good, but skinny friends, waddling around campus is getting harder. In an effort to keep daily humiliations to a minimum, Maddy lives by rules she's developed to hide in plain sight. Fat Rule #2 Never run in front of other humans, even if being chased by a mass-murdering maniac. Better to die with honor than let that jelly jiggle! But when her birthday turns into Celebration Humiliation, Maddy's best friend, Sam, gives her a dose of tough love that would put an elephant down, setting Maddy on a life-changing course that includes Richard Simmons and a date with a college guy, or two. Part memoir, part wishful thinking, The Fat Rules is a laugh-out-loud ride on the crazy train with genuine, heart-breaking insight into the emotional pain of being overweight. If you've ever struggled with weight issues, finding your place in the world, or incapacitating insecurity, Maddy Quinn is right there with you.

I've never had a weight problem, but I could still relate to the main character, Maddy. Why? Because I also have my own insecurities (let's be real - we all do!) and we all live in a world where we try to not have our insecurities define us, but instead try to overcome them. To me, it's a story about a character who finds ways to live with this insecurity (i.e. the Fat Rules), faces her insecurity, and then finally overcomes it. And, just when she thinks her life is perfect, she figures out that her new life has a new set of rules, and she has new obstacles to face. The characters are well defined, the plot is great - even with twists and turns along the way- and the witty dialog makes it even more entertaining to read! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and now that I've finished, I miss my new buddy, Maddy, and her crazy set of friends and family. I would enjoy reading more ... so keep writing Mosteller!Product details

The Fat Rules Misti D Mosteller 9780990943693 Books Reviews
Anyone that has had weight issues will identify with this book. Some parts will make you laugh, others will make you cringe and some will make you want to cry. It was entertaining from start to finish with real characters and witty dialogue. If you haven't had weight issues, still read the book. It will give you a glimpse into what "fat" people think, feel and deal with on a daily basis. After reading so many books recently that were duds, I was glad to finally get my hands on something real.
Other reviewers complained about spelling/grammar errors in the story, but I enjoyed it so much that I didn't even notice them.
I don't like to give spoilers, so I'll simply say it's definitely worth a read.
A 226 lb junior at college, the main character (forgot her name already) has a group of friends she hangs out with. She also has a number of "fat rules" that she lives by. For instance, "Far Rule #17 - no dancing, who wants to see your fat jiggle?". At some point she has a breakthrough and decides to lose weight. As the weight comes off, she has various encounters with the opposite sex that she has never experienced before. By the end of the book, she is at her goal weight, and has learned to stand up for herself and gotten some sense of worth. It is a fast paced book, and some of it is very funny.
Maddy is a college Junior who is ashamed of her weight. She has plenty of friends but she feels like it would be better if she weighed less. But she loves food too much and it is a little while before she goes on her diet. Using scary pictures of herself she tapes them to her mirror for inspiration. For every ten pounds she loses she can take one down. As the weight starts to melt off she starts to feel better about herself. But will ending up with Noah, the guy she has had a crush on be all that it's cracked up to be? And maybe part of her happiness could be with someone else? As she loses the weight will she also turn into someone unreckonizable. Or will she stay the essence of who she was before that first pound came off? This book was a really interesting and entertaining book about a young woman finding herself.
I read the first 30, 40% of the book and then just started clicking to the next chapter and the next. I didn't expect this to be about a person who just drones on and on about how it just sucks to have everyone looking at you---or imaging everyone looking at you. Sure, some unpleasant things happen to people who are overweight, but everyone has insecurities and I don't think the book hit on these. The main character just assumes that everyone who is skinny has it together. The author doesn't even say what the person looks like--in terms I can relate to. Rather, the author says she weighs 266 pounds, but doesn't say how tall she is, is that on a 5 foot body, or on a 6foot body? Plus, the person is in college, she's ready to break free and start experimenting with new things. Instead, she's wrapped up in her own world that everyone is going to notice if she does *anything*.
I enjoyed the first three quarters of the book immensely. As a former heavy person, I felt a lot of the insights about how Maddy was feeling were spot on, including the dynamic with her friends. And then...the last quarter of the book happened. The book just devolved into stereotypes and unreality.(Some Spoilers)...I felt Noah's character was completely stereotyped in the worst, negative way. I went to college and honestly, if Noah was truly the psychopathic jerk the book made him into, he would not be so popular and well liked. From the beginning of the novel it made perfect sense to me that the president of the frat would single out the heavy girl who didn't seem to be having a good time and try to chat with her at his house party. That's how guys like Noah get to be so popular...they genuinely like people and reach out to them. It also made perfect sense that Maddy would start to crush on him, because that's how I was once, too. Turning him into such a colossal jerk was just a letdown and kind of took away from the book. I also didn't feel that it was in any way realistic that he'd want to date Maddy...particularly if he was such a jerk. Why would he even bother? And please, Maddy would have slept with him in a heartbeat, not held out for so long. The last fifty or so pages just ruined what had been a great book up.
Mandy is an obese undergraduate whose friends persuade her that she is allowing her fat to undermine all of her relationships. So bingo bango bongo, Maddy goes on an exercise and diet plan that over the course of time allows her to lose 136 1/2 lbs. Maddy thought that getting thin would alleviate all her problems but she just gained new ones like how to deal appropriately with male attention, how to believe in herself, and how to change her perception of herself.
The things that I did not like about the book were the frequent grammatical usage errors, spelling errors, and the not so veiled references to bulimia.
I don't know that I would recommend this book to others. It was offensive to me as a fat person. Just once I wish that someone could write a book about obese people who made peace with their size and had successful relationships and careers without first having to lose weight.
